Environment Design SU 2010 HW Week 1

1st week's homework I did for CDA's Environment Design class with James Paick.

Roughly an hour and a half each. I'm getting a little faster. Need more though, I want to be able to crack these out in 30 minutes soon.

Yay environments! Yay something new on my blog! :D

Neverending Story: Ext. Environment IX

From one of my thumbsies in my last post. Thumbnail number IX.

Too lazy to clean it up at the moment, but here it is!

Process

References/Textures

For right now though, there is really nothing special about the environment itself. So I talked to Rodney about illustrating these things in the next revision:
Story Point:
- Scene in a jungle before Atreyu meets Gmork.
Key Facts from Story:
- Atreyu ventures into man-made (cave) with stone bricks and walls, and murals depicting key points and characters in the story.
- The earth is experiencing disaster at the moment, ie earthquakes ( due to the invasion of the Nothing) as Atreyu meets Gmork.

Neverending Story: Ext. Environment Thumbs

My thumbnails for my Neverending Story exterior environments in Rodney's class at CDA.

Ivory Tower: I-III and VI.
Falcor's Nest: IV, VII, and X.
Forest: V, VII, and IX.
Rockies/Desert: XI and XII.
Swamp: XIII and XIV.

I'm actually having a hard time deciding on a certain thumb to take on a higher level for class; I like most of them equally for the most part.

Coreander's Bookstore

Update on Coreander's bookstore from the Neverending Story. The last hour I actually spent drawing with a mouse in class because I left my tablet stylus at home. -____- It's my first actual interior environment I'm doing in Photoshop and I'm liking how this is coming out, but there still needs to be a lot of fixing and work to put into it.

Mystical magical things can be found in this bookstore. :]

Week 5(?) Environments Stuff

Remember those reference pages for the Neverending Story I'm doing environments for in Rodney's class? Here's a quick (heh not really) interior painting with three different color comps.

Edit:
Here is a slightly more recent update of the bookstore, along with Rodney's paintovers/suggestions after. The bigger piece has added dramatic lighting and atmosphere! Haha cool.

A lot of stuff I have to redo; composition is pretty much set, but I should work on regrouping my values to better communicate atmosphere (or dust in this case) and a lot of minor changes to the props.

These were the originals I did.

Achoo. Moving this into a more complete painting with color is going to be tough haha... Also photo credit goes to my older cousin Iris Fong in New York.

Week 5 Environment Design Stuff

Ideations for the Ivory Tower in the Neverending Story. Of course it's apparent that I like floaty castles and giant lily petals for elegant throne props. :P

Reference Pages for Fantasy Creatures

Pulling tons of images of different animals, people, costumes, and such for reference to create a fantasy oriented creature in Jerad's creature design class.

Yeh there's a lot. And I also just realized I repeated a monkey face. Lol.

Creature Design Wk. 4 Hw - Again

Yeh... I didn't get to do a paintover... Just managed to get in another sketch but I passed out soon after I finished that. -sigh-

Edit:
Here's a very quick (I mean very) paintover just now. Literally a couple brush strokes and two other layers in like 5 minutes. Haha. It's looks like I was just getting black chalk and white Prisma over it. Only without the mess!

Creature Design Wk. 4 Hw

Phase two of this week's Creature Design homework. Take our sketches, scan them, and throw a sepia-esque tone over them. Phase one was to sketch them with Prisma, and phase three is to paint over them. And that's gonna be hard. Eeee.

Well, if Jerad can do it in like two hours as a demo, I should be able to do it in like six right? Haha... -___-

Pumpkinhead Interpretation

I needs help with the chest area guys. Don't know what to do with it.

For Jerad's class, once again. This is supposed to be my interpretation of Pumpkinhead, a witch-summoned demon from the bowels of my stomach. Err, I mean hell. Suggestions on how I can take it further to make it a functional piece would be nice guys. :]

Env. Design @ CDA Week 3 HW - Neverending Story

Ey everyone! Been a while since I last posted. I'm still waiting on that acceptance package from Art Center... it's supposed to come in somewhere around Tuesday this coming week. Eee.

Anyways to give you guys something new to look at, in my Environment Design class with Rodney at CDA: I'm doing a modern take on the Neverending Story. In this fable there's a world in the book that runs parallel to ours called Phantásien. Phantásien itself is slowly being consumed by the Nothing, which results from the lack of imagination as well as positive feelings experienced by those in the Real World.

This week we pulled references from wherever to base the world we create upon, and did thumbnails/ideations to explore compositions.

I used highly congested metropolitan cities with high populations (Hong Kong, Tokyo, Seoul). The idea was that the the congestion itself causes discomfort within the populace, easily allowing for the presence of the Nothing in Phantásien.

Karl Konrad Koreander's bookstore. To me, old bookstores with wooden ladders and shelves and the smell of old texts have a certain magic to them, so I looked at those for reference.

The Ivory Tower is the home of the Childlike Empress/Moonchild. I referenced a lot of Middle Eastern palaces and mosques because they are very distinct yet simple. I also imagined a lot of white stone or marble accented with gold or granite.

And the ideations/thumbnails for some compositions I'm interested in doing for the project.

Yeh. Thanks for viewing yo!

It's Spring!

Or close to it anyhow. Little bit from my Environment Design class with Rodney at CDA for you guys.

The point of the assignment was to do a value/composition study of a film still, and then to do a reinterpretation of that composition. This one is taken from the near end of the film when the station blows. I think I overdid it on the value study though, I don't think i was supposed to have more than 3-5 values. Heh.

I'm a bit behind on homework for those CDA classes. That portfolio for ACCD left me dead tired, and I'm a bit sick now too. AND, my computer had been freaking out on me and freezing every couple minutes so I had to do a mega reboot and reinstall everything... > < Have to catch up soon, on top of classes at Pcc...
